The Knights Templar
have become associated with legends concerning
secrets and mysteries handed down since the age of the King Solomon's
Temple. Although their inception was shrouded in secrecy they came from
humble beginnings, but after digging under the remains of Solomon's
Temple, they emerged a wealthy and powerful Holy Order.
In the year 1118, the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Jesus Christ were officially recognized by the Church after 19 years of service. They were assigned a headquarters at the former site of the Temple of King Solomon. They then became known as Knights of the Temple, from which their modern name, Knights Templar, is derived.
But
why was the Templar Order formed?
To build castles?
To set up an international banking system? To escort Christian to the
Holy Lands? To convert Muslims to Christianity? We know where the Templars
lived and how they died, but the real question no one has ever answered is . .
. why? That's the real mystery.
One rumor suggests the Knights Templar were a fanatic cult of treasure seekers, sent to the Holy Land during the First Crusade to find the Holy
Grail or the Ark of the Covenant. Considering the Templars were stationed in Kings Solomon's
Temple for many years, it leaves the door open for speculation as to the exact
purpose and nature of their origin.
Yet, another rumor is that the Templars were formed as the
military arm of the Prieure De Sion. It was thought to be a secretive group of
monks, said to include people such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Isaac Newton.
According to the theory, the Templars were formed in 1118 after the Prieure De
Sion removed them from the Order.
We must remember much of the historical writings on the Knights Templar
came well after their demise in 1312 AD. The cult-like religious order
known for its secrecy sought to hide its legacy rather than destroy it.
History is correct in one assertion, the beginning of the
Templars wasn't clearly documented; then again, if your mission is clandestine,
you wouldn't broadcast it to the world, would you?
Regardless of what
historical experts may think or believe, the Knights Templar were humans. So, to
comprehend the motives and actions of the Knights Templar, all it takes is a little
understanding of human nature, framed by a slightly more primitive world.
Without great detail, here are some generalized facts on the Knights Templar:
1) Templars were originally a small group of knights who
swore to protect pilgrims and the holy sites of Jerusalem.
2) At their formation, the first knights were given the
Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Holy Mount and they chose their name from this as
"The Order of the Temple."
3) This ancient site was built over the stables of King
Solomon, and it was here that the mysterious undertakings of the Templars were
to originate.
4) For the first eleven years of their existence, there is
no record of any actual Templar engagements or deeds of battle recorded; no
pilgrims were saved, no infidels driven from the holy places, not even records
of any patrols or forays into the country.
5) Rumors began to circulate that the knights discovered
hidden treasures or relics in the subterranean passages under the holy temple
as they were excavating and erecting their headquarters.
6) With pious oaths of chastity, strict Christian beliefs,
and a mandatory oath of poverty requiring release of all worldly possessions to
the Templar Order, the power and popularity of the Order suddenly increased
exponentially.
7) Unexplainably, some of the wealthiest lords, barons and
noblemen of well-bred families rushed into the service of the Church.
8) The wealth and prestige of the Knights Templar grew
from this, and the Order became the most powerful financial force and banking
institution in Europe. By their official sanction from the Pope, they were
immune from national or even local laws.
9) As their strength grew, the rumors followed that they
had in their possession some secrets, so important to the Church, that they
were beyond the Pope's control.
